EP Review: Torqued – Coup de Grâce (Self Released)
Groove-laden heavy metal band, Torqued were formed in November 2016 and hit the ground running with a 3 track Digital release, a lyric video and an exclusive range on merch. Not being content with this, Torqued landed a series of Festival Performances throughout the UK, including, ‘Bloodstock’, ‘The Mosh against Cancer’, ‘Ashesfest’, ‘Wildfire’, ‘Amplified’, The ‘Uprising Aftermath’, Pentrefest and ‘Rockfest’.
After road testing the set, 2018 saw Torqued release their debut Physical CD, with the EP, ‘ ‘Resurgence’, this received critical acclaim, taking Torqued to a whole new level. 2019 see’s the release of their second EP, ‘Coup de Grace’ on March 29th.
It’s pretty obvious just why Torqued have been turning heads and Coup de Grâce is sure to turn a few more. Four tracks of grubby sounding groove metal that is energetic, heavy and determined. Everything we want from our head-bangers.
Intricate riffing, stiring effects and a enthusiastic beat, the title track begins things in meaty style. Before The Revelation takes that in a slightly more subdued direction, at least at first. When the volume and tempo does increase briefly, the viciousness really makes its mark. Still, it’s how well the tracks blend rhythmic metal groove with bone-crunching heaviness that really stands out across the EP.
Look no further then Open Wound as a the best example of this blend. Really moody, really heavy and really catchy all at the same time. A hair-raising listen, easily the best track on the EP. Thanks to the blast beat drumming and sharper riffs.
It certainly doesn’t drop in quality though as we reach The Darkest of Shadows. A rougher, chunkier guitar section gives this one a progressive feel while the vocals push it towards the more extreme side of metal. The combination is familiar and comforting, exciting and interesting confirming that Torqued are looking like a powerful entity within the metal world.
