EP Review: Tooms – The Shmeckoning (Self Released)
Filthy metal trio from Limerick City, Tooms draw inspiration from sludge, prog, death, grindcore, psychedelia, and stoner doom.
Since signing with Cursed Monk Records in 2018, they have been gigging, writing and recording their own blend of nasty tones, releasing their debut full length “The Orb Offers Massive Signals” in 2020.
Making it out of Metal to the Masses Dublin on top, Tooms went on to close the Jägermeister Stage of Bloodstock Open Air 2022. Their latest EP, “The Shmeckoning”, is set to release on May 1st, 2023.
Nasty, troublesome, and fun, it’s Tooms! One of the brightest genre-defying acts in Ireland right now. The three-piece are back with their much-anticipated new EP and bringing stupidly addictive noise with the three tracks on offer.
Three tracks that deliver harsh heaviness, garish gutturals, warped tempo shifts, and a constant source of reasons to head-bang. Where an opener like Anvil Crawler can beat you over head with its riffs and bursts of aggression, and you’ll love it regardless. Or a track like Stabbed in the Head can deliver equal amounts of groove, doominess, and gruesome heaviness, and you’ll not want the mugging to end.
Finally, it’s the grin-inducing Megalobong II (the great whitey shark). Where it is simply impossible to not both head-bang with the riffs and shout along with the vocals. So much thrown into a track that is not even two minutes long, this is what makes Tooms so special.
If you’ve not had the chance to experience Tooms yet, this EP is a strong place to start. Short and varied, the quality the band exudes is on full and filthy display here.
