EP Review: This Summit Fever – Distraction Rituals (Self Released)

This Summit Fever, the high-octane and self-described “Heavy Fuzz Rock” two-piece from just outside of Birmingham (the birthplace of heavy metal), has announced the upcoming release of their newest self-produced fuzz rock EP, Distraction Rituals, due Friday, April 28th, 2023.

Distraction Rituals is a loose concept EP about society’s tendency to ignore problems and focus on immediate pleasures instead.

While ‘heavy fuzz rock’ might be the simplest way to describe the sound of This Summit Fever, it’s not quite fair to limit them to one specific genre or another. Simply put, they’re a band with ideas and plenty of creativity to realise them.

A little bit of grunge, touches of garage, post, and stoner rock, if there’s one sure thing about Distraction Rituals, it is that it makes you want to move. Especially when you get such groovy head-bangers as Messiah and trippy, gurning body shakers as Sometimes A Tidal Wave. The first half of the EP showing off This Summit Fever’s imagination and talent to keep the listener fully engaged with their style of rock.

With some more instrumental girth, fuzzy groove, and energetic vocals, It Contorts works to twist the mind to This Summit Fever’s desires. They want to make you move and it’s very hard to deny them. Which does mean it is sad to see it over already. Although they certainly end things with a bit of a bang. A moodier and more dramatic bang in the form of The Widow. The instruments really hum here, the riffs are very strong, and the vocals buzz encouragingly in the ears.
