EP Review: The Necrosexual – Gory Hole (Self Released)

Heathens and hellraisers, perverts of all ages. The time has come to once again go one on one with the GRIM1…

He’s back.

Gory Hole 2

Philadelphia’s Necrosexual, the most electrifying band in corpse entertainment, returns with their new EP The Gory Hole Overture In F#. (The forces of darkness can only be properly summoned in the key of F sharp.)

A spiritual sequel to Necro’s 2018 album GRIM-1, The Gory Hole Overture In F# captures Necro’s wildly twisted imagination through eighties thrash riffs, corpse paint, and blood curdling falsettos to compliment to the virtuosic guitar leads.

Pour yourself an overflowing goblet of the cheapest boxed wine and remember, IT’S NOT A PHASE I’M GOING THROUGH DAD.

The Necrosexual’s The Gory Hole Overture in F#” will be available for purchase and download on May 17th 2019.

Gory Hole 3

Now we love The Necrosexual. The character and man behind the corpse-paint is a good dude and the tongue in cheek approach to metal is fun. You can read an interview we conducted with him here. However, we’d be lying if we said we loved the last album, GRIM-1. We didn’t, it’s as simple as that but you can read our full thoughts here.

How does Gory Hole stack up?

We have killer classic metal riffing and head-banging glory (gory?) which ticks all the right boxes. The five tracks deliver a raw and unrefined listen that harks back to the old days of thrash. As well as that, when the vocals are kept low, dark and evil, it’s all perfectly good stuff. However, every so often The Necrosexual shows off just how high he can go and it is…jarring. The opener, Necromutants March Through Hell – The Prelude has these really high-pitched yells and it cuts through everything like a spike drilled into the skull.

Whereas The Gory Hole Overture in F# is a much more enjoyable listen even with the squeal that is dropped in at the end.

Things keep getting better with the nasty sound of The Lair Where No Light Enters, a very apt title. The solo in particular is a nice slice of classic metal pie. Before In Ancient Daze (Black Widow) takes things down and dirty with some nice groove to the guitars.

A much improved EP wraps up with Orgy on Your Burial. The speed immediately getting the neck muscles moving before it flips into a more disjointed listen and the high yelps return.

I want to love The Necrosexual’s music and while I do like Gory Hole more then GRIM-1, it still has flaws. We’re moving in the right direction but not quite there yet.
