EP Review: The Miser – Memento Mori (Self Released)

The Miser, a four-piece stoner / hard rock band from London will release their second EP, Memento Mori on February 3rd, 2023. The five track EP focuses around themes of mental health, horror and loss.

Exciting stuff from The Miser here, kicking off this EP with a bevy of frantic hard rock groove and energy in the form of House on The Hill. The highlight being the infectious chorus that sees the exceedingly good vocals hit impressive highs. This is a head-banger of a start, killer riffs and an impressive guitar solo making the complete picture one to remember.

Chunky and chuggy rhythm, A New Dream transforms as it goes on, into something more elaborate and wild. The Miser beginning to really showcase their imagination, while still delivering exciting heavy hard rock. Further cemented by the initial weird tone shift of Scars, a track that grows and grows, getting groovier as it goes on. Eventually transforming into one of Memento Mori’s most memorable tracks.

The latter part of the record certainly keeps things interesting too as The Miser unleash Yeah, We’re Back. A brash blast of hyperactive hard rock. Before wrapping up their new EP with the heavy stoner groove of the title track. A body shaking track if there ever was one, with just the right amount of sinisterness to it. Descending into ‘jam’ style chaos around the halfway point to keep listeners on their toes, it seems.

A really memorable release. The Miser do more than enough to stand out from the pack with Memento Mori.
