EP Review: The Hÿss – Hÿss III: The Hÿssening (Self Released)
Combining elements of stoner, rock, punk, and metal, Chicago’s The Hÿss are back with a brand-new release called ‘Hÿss III: The Hÿssening’. Out on February 18th, 2023.
Bringing the groove from the off, The Hÿss deliver a dramatic start with the opening track, Are You Listening to the Hÿssening? Where atmospheric guitar tones mesh with head-banging rhythm and the vocals have a nice gruffness about them. It’s a punchy hit, with plenty of vigour, and enough of The Hÿss’ instrumental oddities to really stand out.
From that to something moodier, but oozing atmosphere, and with a nice blend of eccentric melody and fuzzy rock groove. It’s the impressive Silvio, before Science of Mountain takes the energy back up an extra notch. A rocking number that encourages the body to move in time with the insistent groove of it all. One of the EPs banger tracks.
Angel of Repose, the penultimate offering, delivers gold-plated riffs and bass hooks. The punky side of The Hÿss really coming out to play here. A very infectious track with some fascinating melodically tinged twists and turns along the way. Before the ending track Gnome Ken Bone sees The Hÿss’ deliver an enhanced example of moody melody, burgeoning atmosphere, and bursts of rocking passion. A delightfully weird closer that is as memorable as everything that came before it.
The Hÿss continue to stand out from the pack with their amalgamation of genres. On the one hand, Hÿss III: The Hÿssening can be enjoyed as an eclectic blast of groove. On the other, it’s a shape-shifting and evolved showcase of ideas that excite and intrigue.
