EP Review: Taken By The Tide – Revenge (Self Released)

Taken By The Tide’s birth began with their debut release ‘There’s No Such Thing As An Atheist In A Foxhole’, winning them comparisons to bands such as Ion Dissonance, Meshuggah, Sylosis and Mastodon.

Their darkly progressive self released second EP, ‘Hands of Spite’ was put out through Bandcamp as a ‘Name Your Price’ download. After extensive touring with fellow tech monsters Mask Of Judas, as well as a number of festival appearances, the band entered the studio again to record their new EP titled ‘Revenge’.

Revenge will be released on August 3rd 2018.

The band comment: “We are extremely pleased to finally peel back the seal on what we’ve been up to. Moloch is the first track released from our forthcoming EP titled ‘Revenge’ and represents, in every respect, the greatest sacrifice. A deeply personal track that details decades of family abuse finally unravelled by dementia. This is a discordant, angular track written in spite and delivered with hatred. Revenge is finally near.”

Revenge 2

Intelligent and technical that looks to impress while also spitting in your face with roaring and brutal metal. Taken by the Tide’s 6-track EP is a mix of death metal, progressive metal, hardcore and djent, a marrying of genres that makes for a hell of a listen.

There is so much to take in and this is an EP that will need multiple listens. A least to really find your footing with sharpened riffing, booming bass and fiery vocals. The Organs Are Mine and Grave Lessons burn brightly with aggressive hooks and a decent amount of groove. Before Moloch lays on even heavier and darker noise making you feel every bit of angry vitriol that the band have.

There is a short break in the proceedings with Revenge Overture. A short gothic keyboard tune before Taken by the Tide come back with force. Angfang Extinction and Now I Am Become Death showcase the two dominant styles with the former delivering some of the most progressive guitar elements of the EP and the latter being a raging storm of metal heaviness.
