EP Review: Sunbleached – Delicate Places We Hide (Self Released)

Blending emo rock with shoegaze, Brisbane band Sunbleached will release their sophomore EP, ‘Delicate Places We Hide’ on March 24th, 2023.

The alternative stylings of Sunbleached is quite appealing overall. Especially once you get a taste of what emo rock mixed with shoegaze is like. That’s the job of opener Spinning Around.

Think punchy guitar riffs, strong percussion, melodies, and heartfelt vocals that make it feel lighter than it is. Alongside some strong lyrical content, Sunbleached do a good job of making you feel ‘spun around’, ensuring that it’s a track that will get multiple listens.

However, it’s likely that Toyfriend will be the real attention-grabber as it’s a track that will leave you feeling melancholic without an overuse of melodrama. A sobering and emotive track with sweet melody and that bleeds honesty and relatability.

Aptly titled, Heavy Turn sees Sunbleached upping the heavy ante with a raucous showcase of rock. Albeit still focused on their atmospherically charged melodious ways. This track has a particularly strong and infectious chorus.

Before the EP closes out with a bit of bang. A less ordered, messier, and more gaze-focused effort that shows Sunbleached can get quite wild when they want too. Easily the most intense track on the EP, but also one of the most intriguing.
