EP Review: Sterling Serpent – Sterling Serpent (Ván Records)
Sterling Serpent formed in 2015 in Seattle, Washington. The band features current and former members of King Dude, Bell Witch, Serpentent and Terminal Fuzz Terror. This self-titled EP marks their first recording, to be released on August 20th 2019.
A very moody effort, this record is a little bit bluesy, a little bit gothic and a little bit cold. It’s mellow but in a depressing way, yet it still appeals. A lot of that can be laid at the feet of the contrasting vocals. The deep and booming male vocals playing off the lighter but still powerful female vocals really well.
Violet is a decent introduction even if it’s hardly spectacular whereas Eternity really opens the door to what Sterling Serpent are capable of. A little bit harder, a little bit heavier and dripping in suffocating darkness. Bones builds on that with a rockier rhythm that has just a touch of fuzz to the guitars before Evelyn closes out the EP.
The best track of the bunch, the mellow use of a keyboard, the slow melody and less intrusive singing really stands out. This is the track to check out.
