EP Review: Slump/At War With The Sun – SP/LIT (Self Released)
Slump and At War with The Sun have announced the upcoming release of SP/LIT, a DIY split EP with ten minutes of music from each band, due on 8th December 2023. The split precedes a run of co-headlining shows around the Midlands.
Two bands, two types of heavy music, one creating a psychedelic funeral doom and sludge sound, and the other showcasing a heavy and fast stoner metal sound. Two bands that offer different things but come from the same world.
At War with the Sun have one track to offer, and it’s the massive sound of The Garden. A near 10-minute doom behemoth, but one that features dramatic melody that slowly bleeds into robust and heady, heavy doom. At War with the Sun draw a lot of their sound from the older days of doom, but layer the plodding experience with psychedelic tones, and add a foot-sucking sludgy groove to things. It’s dark, it’s harsh, but it’s extremely listenable, and its length flies by in a filthy blur.
Whereas Slump are a bit more energetic, certainly a hell of a lot groovier, but with their own unique touches. Evident by the barnburner of a track that is Dust. The lively chorus alone makes this one a winner of a track. Slump compliment this body-shaker with something a little different in Kneel. Here, they offer up a more expansive blend of stoner groove, with touches of doom, and plenty of head-banging heaviness. They’re both great tracks, different, but clearly from the mind of the same mind.
Both bands have delivered some pretty great music here.
