EP Review: Slugcrust – Discharge(d) (Terminus Hate City)
Emerging from the vermin-saturated depths of Greenville, South Carolina, the grindcore band Slugcrust is set to release their visceral new EP, Discharge(d), on June 28th, 2024.
The equivalent of being hit by an 18-wheeler, left in a bloody mess, then as the life leaves your body, some malevolent creature emerges from the darkness to consume your remains. You can feel it too, but the carnage created by the smash, has left you incapable of screaming, so all you can do is silently beg for the pain and suffering to end as quickly as possible.
That is just one scenario that the mind conjures up upon listening to the sickening sound of noise that comes from Discharge(d). Five of the most unpalatable tracks heard this year, but five mightily creative examples of grindcore. Slugcrust are an ugly band, making some seriously horrible sounds, and there’s something so lovable about them.
They throw their all into this, and even though it is a grindcore record with all the trappings of that genre, Slugcrust have enough imagination to offer up fresh touches here and there. Nowhere else, but with the title track, is this better showcased as Slugcrust break the grindcore rule by dropping a track that is over 3-minutes in length. It might very well be the best thing on the EP.
It’s over now. Enjoy the silence of the void.
