EP Review: Sleepless – Host Desecration (Metal Warrior Records)
Progressive trad-metal trio Sleepless – featuring former members of underground death metal pioneers Dead Conspiracy – have signed with the Netherlands’ Metal Warrior Records and will release their full-length debut album ‘Host Desecration’ on April 15th, 2022.
A combination of their earlier ‘Blood Libel’ EP and new music, the EP’s tracks have been remastered and the song ‘Blood Libel’ is an extended version.
Sleepless kick off this debut full-length with a handful of new tracks. Namely The King Who’s Not There, Bite the Hands That Bleed and There’s Something in the Fog. Each a weighty thump of progressive heavy metal with cheeky riffs, brash tempo shifts and an attention-grabbing vocal style.
The first of the EP tracks then makes it appearance and now sharing its name with this album’s title. A blistering blast of energy, the guitars and drums are ripping and tearing through the underbelly of trad-metal while the vocals positively soar with encouragement. The darker tone shifts only enhance the pure head-banging qualities of this hit.
It’s another new banger in the form of Diviner of Truth, with Sleepless stepping lightly into deeper and doomier territories while also delivering a progressive powerhouse of noise. Before the next two tracks from the Blood Libel EP show up. Blood Libel (A Vampire Tale), a thrilling slice of horror-infused heavy metal and Deluded Hordes, a progressive behemoth.
The album then wraps up with one of each. The new one, a frantic head-banger called Mushroom Clouds at Night and the old one, The Man Who Could Not Sleep, which is a bit of an epic. Not just in length, although it is the longest track by a decent margin, but in style.
