EP Review: Slaughtersun – Black Marrow (Self Released)
Slaughtersun’s new EP, ‘Black Marrow’, is composed of the band’s first four singles (plus an intro and a live song), meticulously remixed and remastered. The EP will be released on January 10th, 2025.
Sinister and ambient, the intro of Unearthly Propaganda sets the scene, allowing an intense combination of hefty riffs and drums to immediately batter the senses with Fall of the Firmament and Relentless Thelemic. There’s a wildness to Slaughtersun, one rooted in death metal, but with a sharper and more technical edge. Frantic and furious, exemplified by the garish vocals, the first half of the EP is enjoyably brazen.
The latter is a much more ‘to the point’ kind of track, one with big sounding riffs, and a thrashy underbelly. Which is why it’s got a live rendition at the end of the EP called Relentless Thelemic (Frightbox Live Recording). A tribute to the closing of Frightbox Recording, the studio where Slaughtersun recorded this track live, marking the end of an era for the iconic Passaic, NJ, studio.
The other two tracks go as hard as everything else. First, there is Ready Cell Awaits, one of the more challenging tracks as it showcases progressive thinking warped by a constant slew of unusual rhythmic shifts that is more like a convulsion than anything else. Then there is the title track, a hefty and harsh expulsion of aggressive heavy noise. Delightful.
