EP Review: Sense Offender – I (Self Released)
Sense Offender are a four piece heavy band from the north of England who combine elements of hardcore. sludge and mathcore to create believable intensity. I is their debut EP and was released digitally on the 16th of May 2018. A physical release is in the pipeline to coincide with their first live appearances in August this year.
No arguments…your senses will be offended as the four-piece send a diabolical amount of noise your way. Opening with The Sound Of Braille, an appealing mess of whining feedback, static noises and spoken word. A startling way to open the EP, it will certainly catch many listeners off guard.
It’s effectively a long intro though as the metal starts to come thick and fast afterwards starting with Prophet-less. Hitting hard, it’s a track with a bit of meanness to it, the kind that makes you quicken your step or cross the road to avoid!
Sense Offender then let their hardcore hair down for a roaring Starving Pigs & aggressive Anointed with Seizures. The latter’s feral sound is a great example of the power that exude from the riffs, drums and vocals within Sense Offender. Heavy but not without purpose particularly when the pace increases.
The EP is rounded off with a rolling drum beat that erupts into circle pit heaven for Weigh My Pieces. The crunch of the drums alongside filthy death metal guitars and roaring vocals sent straight from the bowels of Hell means this is an EP that won’t be forgotten anytime soon. Sense Offender’s understanding of how to mesh several different sub-genres makes them stand out. Effective in how heavy it is but not a mess of noise either.
