EP Review: Sea of Snakes – World of Fire (Metal Assault)

The Californians’ Sea of Snakes trade is in fuzzed-out stompers with in your face grit, and it’s with great pleasure that they release their debut EP World On Fire – an apt name considering current planetary circumstances. It will be available to all ears on April 2nd 2021 via Metal Assault.

Gawd damn! This is an EP with some serious groove. Sleazy, dirty and sexy. This is the stuff you want to hear while a couple of pints deep in a dive bar somewhere. The kind of kick ass heavy rock and roll that fills your head with fuzz but puts a stupid smile on the face.

Try and not move while listening to Let the Fire Burn or Ride the Line. It is simply not possible. It’s not just the riffs either that compel the body to move. The vocals are so commanding with a delicious touch of gruff to them. Combine those with chuggy bass and chunky drums and it’s easy to see what makes these two tracks and what follows so compelling.

Especially as Son of Man does change the formula up a bit. A slower and heavier tempo with some snarl and snark, it’s a mean sounding effort. Less of a body shaker and more of a methodical head banger.

Fear Behind the Stare melodious start gives way to the chunkiest of riffs. The power behind the guitars here enough to send some small shockwaves across the planet!

Before the excellent Drink Your Teeth begins in similar fashion, slow and twisted sounding, the thump of the percussion is nuts. Then, with the scream of guitar feedback in the background, a grungy chorus rises up to surprise just about everyone. Still not done keeping listeners on their toes, the latter tempo shift makes for a frenzied head banging finish.

Welcome to the party, Sea of Snakes. It’s good to have you here.
