EP Review: Saur – EPs Are A Dead Format (Self Released)
Saur (Saur, like the end of dinosaur; not sour, like when life gives you lemons) are a four-piece heavy punk rock band from Leicester. Their new EP ‘EPs Are A Dead Format’ is out now.
A rollicking punk rock fun time is guaranteed every time a band with Saur’s outlook, drive, and abilities come along. Exciting and energetic music with an innate amount of catchiness coming from the rock side of things, but with just enough punk snark and snarl to ensure it’s not completely accessible.
Although it’s hard to see anyone not finding Never Ever an immediate joyous experience with its foot-tapping and head-nodding rock rhythm and infectious chorus. Whereas Skipping has punk spirit and some surprising metal moments, Saur getting heavy! Before (Unsolicited) Dick Pics wraps up the original portion of the EP with the EPs biggest singalong, or maybe that should be shout along?
It’s not done yet though, there’s one more, and it’s one more that will generate wildly different views, Saur covering the iconic Leonard Cohen song, Hallelujah, but having some fun by parodying Shrek, which of course, uses the original song in a ‘emotional’ scene. It’s overplayed, it’s over covered, but Saur do a decent punk rock version of it. It’s hard to be too enthusiastic about it, purely because it’s far from the highlight of the EP, but chances are there will be plenty of people who do love it.
Regardless, EPs Are A Dead Format is a mighty fine release that showcases a band balancing rock and punk perfectly.
