EP Review: Revenant – What A Time To Be Alive (Self Released)
‘What A Time to Be Alive’ is the new EP from emerging Brit rockers Revenant. The rockers draw influence from the likes of Blackberry Smoke, Guns N Roses, and Black Crowes, and the EP will be released on May 10th, 2024.
There’s something so unbelievable about hearing this kind of rock music coming from a UK band. Which does speak volumes about the job Revenant do here, showcasing Americana-tinged rock and roll groove with anthemic aplomb. The bands they’ve been compared to, or have been influenced by, sure make a ton more sense once you’ve heard what they can do.
It’s a strong start to the EP with Coming Back to Life. Revenant showing off their riffy ways, letting the percussion drive the rhythm, and delivering a smooth vocal style that is rock through and through. A catchy chorus is the cherry on top. The following Draw the Lines doesn’t quite have the same heft, but it does have plenty of guitar-driven groove regardless. A pair of super-accessible listens.
Things are then changed up in predictable, but likable fashion, with The Healer as Revenant drop a rock ballad that really lets the lovely vocals shine. Although there is nothing wrong with the latter half guitar solo either.
It’s back to grooving and singing along to the sexy sound of The Masquerade, a track with some killer riffs and again, a screaming solo. Before the EP comes to a close with Rolling on My Back. A strong combination of both the melody-driven and groove-focused sides of Revenant.
What started off as being quite implausible, ends up being emphatically authentic by the end. Revenant are the real rock deal, and chances are, you’re going to love what they have to offer on this EP.
