EP Review: Return to Earth – Octavius (Bald Freak Music)

New Jersey synthwave trio Return to Earth will release their brand-new EP, ‘Octavius’ on May 10th, 2024, via Bald Freak Music.

Is enjoying synthwave a guilty pleasure? Sometimes it feels like it is for me, but when it’s done so well, as it is in the case of this EP, who wouldn’t enjoy the sonic experiences that the style of music can bring? Especially when it has an exciting alternative twist that gives it a weirder, but fresher feel.

Of course, even with this, no-one will be left feeling left out when it comes to catchiness and memorability as that is something in Return to Earth’s DNA. The first big smile inducing moment coming from Deeper into Me, and its wonderfully airy chorus.

There’s a lot of atmosphere to Soiled, and here, Return to Earth showcase moodier vibes, albeit twisted by synth melodies. Whereas the title track is wonderfully dreamy sounding, keeping a more mellow feel to proceedings overall, and allowing the vocals to truly take centre stage.

Finally, it’s The Slicer and arguably Return to Earth at their most unconventional sounding, yet even then, they manage to deliver a synth slice of infectious gold.

Guilty pleasure or not, when it’s bloody good music, that’s all that matters and Octavius is bloody good music.
