EP Review: Pythies – Disillusion (Self Released)
Influenced by the likes of L7, 7 Year Bitch, Babes in Toyland, and Hole, French witchy grungy punk three-piece Pythies will release their new EP, Disillusion, on September 20th, 2024.
One aspect of Pythies, and the sound of this EP, that has serious appeal is their sardonic style and nowhere is that better showcased than with the infectious opener, Blondinette. The three-piece confronting cliches around ‘blondes’ and how they are often depicted as stupid and not worth hearing with a punky and rocking piece of music that has a wickedly enjoyable level of snark to it.
Immediately, it’s clear, that Pythies will take no prisoners, but also know how to have some fun and have the talent to keep things interesting as they deliver something more melodic with I Pythie You. Although the touch of grungy chaos that comes with this track is also delightful.
Then bringing the punk rock vitality to the forefront with the thrilling bass-heavy groove of Ouroboros. Following that banger up with the kick-ass alternative-twisted banger that is Dissociation. Easily one of the EPs best tracks, finding Pythies in a very creative mood and bringing forth some big riffs and infectious rhythms. Before Toy wraps things up with Pythies trademark lyrical snark, foot-tapping rock groove, infectious rockiness, and memorable grungy undertones.
It’s a really likeable release showcasing a band with a ton of talent in their ranks. The more we get from Pythies, the better.
