EP Review: Pretty With The Lights Out – Pumpkin Spice Formaldehyde (We Are Horror Records)
Pretty With the Lights Out bursts onto the scene with Pumpkin Spice Formaldehyde, a 14-minute narrative of carving jack-o’-lanterns, the thrills and romance of the drive-in, and revenge. All ending in a lovely stroll through Tolkien’s Middle-earth taking you down to Goblin Town. The EP is out now via We Are Horror Records.
Talk about making an impression! Pretty With the Lights Out come screaming out of the darkness with a six-track EP that delivers on the promise of high-powered horror punk. Empathic and energetic, Pumpkin Spice Formaldehyde is a thrill ride where you might lose your head come the end.
Hitting an immediate high with the grin-inducing vigour and anthemic We Belong Dead. It might be stitched together from the parts of horror punk but it’s so electrifying, no-one will be able to sit still.
Faster and more garish sounding, Jack-o’-Lantern Social Club has cool sounding singalong vibes. Whereas Friday Night’s Alright for Fright’nin’ is thrashy and aggressive, making it an apt title, even if it’s still a ghoulish party with Pretty With the Lights Out.
Liable to raise the dead, Do Not (not) Resuscitate is a mover and groover with some devilish riffs and diabolical vocals. Followed then by punchy and pounding The Best Revenge Is Living Hell, Pretty With the Lights Out at their heaviest sounding. Before this memorable EP returns to the grave with Down, Down to Goblin Town. A final frenzy of fiery punk that hammers the final nail in nicely and would put a smile on Tolkien’s face.
