EP Review: Press to MECO – Acoustic (Marshall Records)

Released on February 15th 2019, Acoustic is a six-track EP from exciting and powerful alt-rock trio, Press to MECO. The band is a GBHBL favourite and you can read our review of their last full album, Here’s to the Fatigue here.

This EP is definitely something for fans to sink their teeth into and tide themselves over until we get new music from the rock trio. However it also holds up as a stand-alone record thanks to the great ability of Press to MECO to draw emotional beauty from music.

The acoustic version of A Quick Fix has been out for a while now but that doesn’t stop it being a really listenable track. The softer and gloomy melody alongside the sweetness of the vocals works incredibly well.

I’m not to sure what to make of the cover of Norwegian pop artist Sigrid’s Strangers though. The original song does little for me so Press to MECO could hardly make it worse.

Speaking on their decision to cover it, Press To MECO shared “We’re big fans of well written credible pop music, and that’s Sigrid all over, she’s an artist we really respect. As soon as we started jamming Strangers we knew we could have some fun and put our own spin on it.”

Normal service resumes for a killer version of Here’s to the Fatigue’s A Place In It All. The highlight of the record thanks to the poignant melody although the peppy beat of Familiar Ground off the same record comes close to bettering it.

The penultimate offering, If All Your Parts Don’t Make A Whole keeps things rooted in bubbly bounce with the group vocals really excelling. Before Autopsy off their 2015 album, Good Intent ends things on a high. This is a song I’m not familiar with but the ponderous melody is so appealing it ensures I’m going back to check out the original song.

Press to MECO continue to keep their stock high with this release. Both old and new fans will enjoy it.
