EP Review: Pathos & Logos – Cult (Self Released)

For guitarist Kyle Neeley and drummer Paul Christiansen, celebrating Art as a system of spirituality and Magick was a way of life long before they formed Pathos & Logos, the band opening up new avenues for exploring these themes. The instrumental progressive duo create complex and involving pieces, dropping their debut Glory To The Order in 2020, and returning in 2022 with Cult. Out on the 24th of June 2022.

It’s so secret that we think Pathos & Logos are an excellent band. An instrumental duo that have wowed us with their detailed, complex and meaningful music. An instrumental duo that continue to impress as this EP features some of the band’s best and most creative work to date.

A thing of beauty, Initiation’s airy and peaceful melody is complimented by a unique structure of guitar and drums. Creating wonderful imagery, it’s very magical sounding, especially as it begins to expand in size and scope as it goes on. Growing and growing into a more complex but equally as thrilling listen. Talk about a bar setting track for Pathos & Logos.

Things are getting heavier, heavier than Pathos & Logos often get, with Novitiate. Where a chunky instrumental combo lays waste to any sense of melody, yet the detail adds so much freshness. It continues to deliver enlightening passages that twist and turn until there is nothing left but to marvel at the end result.

Keeping it heavy, delving into speedier territories, Regnum features some of the sharpest sounding guitar parts of the entire EP. The high, almost scream like, is piercing but impactful. Backed up with the continuing classiness of the eccentric, but meaty drums. It’s surprisingly epic sounding.

Talking of epic sounding tracks, this brings us to Ivdex and the impossible heights this track reaches. It’s hard to call this the best track on the EP because every track has wowed but this might be up there as the one of the finest things Pathos & Logos have ever created. It won’t just make you feel ten feet tall. It will buoy the soul, explode like fireworks in the mind and deliver a crushing blast of instrumental heaviness unlike anything the duo has done before. Need further proof? There are some vocals in this track… sort of.

It’s no secret that we think Pathos & Logos are an excellent band and Cult has only cemented that further. It’s time for everyone to start talking about their talents.
