EP Review: Ottone Pesante – …and the Black Bells Rang (Aural Music)
With their mix of metal, jazz, brass and avant-garde, Ottone Pesante won international critical acclaim with their latest album ‘DoomooD’ and are ready to charm new and old listeners worldwide. The trio announces a new EP entitled ‘…and the Black Bells Rang’ due for release on March 4th, 2022 via Aural Music.
As eclectic as always, Ottone Pesante continue to prove themselves to be a creative force not to be reckoned with on this new EP. Where 4 tracks exude such control and such self-assurance, it’s downright startling. Although, long-term listeners will surely find themselves as comfortable as always with the unique sounds that this band make.
It begins in chaotic fashion, as expected, with Black Bells of Destruction and from there, things only get even more crazy with Carne Marcia and Die Ewige Wiederkunft Des Gleichen. The former, moody, and difficult to swallow but not through want of trying. The latter, eerie and atmospheric but building towards a more intense and aggressive tempo. A truly staggering listen that is exemplifies the unique make-up of this band.
It’s just an EP this time round though so with Scrolls of War, things come to an end. Though, what an ending it is. One with dirty jazz overtones and moody brass undertones. As avant-garde as it comes, the thrilling tone is what sticks long afterwards.
There are not many bands out there doing unusual metal music quite like Ottone Pesante and this EP once again proves that their imagination is unlimited.
