EP Review: Of Mice & Men – Timeless (SharpTone Records)
Metalcore giants Of Mice & Men will release their brand EP, ‘Timeless’ on February 26th, 2021 via SharpTone Records.
It seems like a long time ago that the mainstream metal press couldn’t get enough Of Mice & Men. Championed as the next big thing, significant line-up changes and an abundance of similar style bands halted their meteoric metalcore rise. Although, the mainstream metal press’ fickle habits regarding the ‘next big thing’ certainly didn’t help.
They may not be as at the forefront as they once were but that hasn’t stopped Of Mice & Men from keeping busy. This new EP, one of three planned for 2021.
First up, Timeless, the title track. Where fiery groove and frenzied metalcore is the name of the game. Leading into a powerful and thoughtful sounding chorus. Something Of Mice & Men are so good at, they could probably do it in their sleep. Not that this is in anyway a sleepy sounding track, instead it’s every bit the metalcore mover you could hope it be.
Talking of bouncy groove though. Obsolete is a pit-opener that brings some serious metal thrills and melodic chills. The chorus is fine, but the meatier verses are where it’s at here.
Finally, Anchor wraps up the EP with a much more mellow effort interlaced with these urgent sounding bursts of intensity. Of Mice & Men sounding downright dangerously desperate at times. It has a ton of impact though and as the closer, it feels suitably large.
If the rest of this year’s output is as strong as this, it could be the year where Of Mice & Men force their way back into the consciousness of metalheads all over.
