EP Review: Oceans of Angels – The Gift (Self Released)
Oceans of Angels is an alternative/indie pop-rock band from South Africa and formed in 2021 by Sheldon Horvatic. They will release their debut EP ‘The Gift’ on the 17th of February 2023.
A dramatic intro gives way to a moody and ear-pleasing alt-rock tune with Loaded Gun. The smooth vocals, sweet melody, and catchy chorus makes for a memorable listen. Oceans of Angels making no apologies for how the pop and indie genres have influenced their sound. It’s a nice opener and a track you could very easily hear playing on most radio stations around the world, such is its accessibility.
Accessibility that exists in the entire EP as they deliver a very melodramatic listening experience with Shattered Soldier. The highlight being the twinkly guitar melody. Before the title track enhances the emotional weight of the record with foot-tapping rhythm and Carnival sees Oceans of Angels delivering one of the strongest anthems overall. The chorus of this latter track is one hell of an ear-worm moment.
With Still On Fire, we get an extended sci-fi infused melodic intro which builds into something a little funkier and fun. A track you, and just about everyone, can dance to. Before Only An Echo wraps the EP up in similar dramatic fashion as the opener. Although this track has a grandeur that really lifts the soul.
