EP Review: Obvurt – The Beginning (Brutal Mind)

Quebec Death Metal trio Obvurt will release debut their EP ‘The Beginning’ on March 31st, 2021 via Brutal Mind.

Talk about an apt title. The Beginning, the arrival of Obvurt and the rebirth of band mastermind Philippe Drouin. Who severely injured his right wrist in 2016 and had to relearn how to play guitar again using his left hand. This is the end product of all that work, yet the beginning for Obvurt.

It’s an incredible story and one with a happy ending (or beginning) as Obvurt have put together a banger of a death metal album here. One with plenty of bark and even more bite. Six tracks, one of which is a gothic intro, Obvurt bring the heavy from the moment Osteophyte kicks in. A violent pummelling from the word ‘go’ and followed up by even more heavy blows in the form of The First Light and Obverted.

The latter’s guest guitar solo from the immensely talented Michael Angelo Batio adds even more weight to the overall quality on show here. Thick and sinewy riffs, blistering drumming, and demonically charged vocals. It’s the meatiest kind of death metal that calls to the beast inside and demands you head-bang until you can’t anymore.

Scars of War is the penultimate offering and deserves special mention for just how much darker it sounds. Still incredibly ruthless in the speed department but there are these exciting drops in tempo that just feel so sinister. It’s followed by The End. An instrumental that sees a short and chunky start give way to a viciously hard sounding death metal rhythm.

This truly is the beginning because Obvurt are a quality band.
