EP Review: Oakenthrone – Embers of Reverie (Self Released)

Embers of Reverie marks a new starting point for Oakenthrone. Where the demos were a proof of concept and an experimentation with finding the right tone, Embers of Reverie embraces the grim and the grandiose in equal measure. Doom laden and epic; but black metal at its core.

Dark, grim, and malevolent, Oakenthrone’s two-track EP is what happens when a soul becomes corrupted by the blacker side of metal. The two gargantuan offerings of this EP are blackened in nature, but not rooted solely in that sound.

Something that is evident from the start with the title track. Oakenthrone immediately delivering an epic soundscape that has doom undertones and shifts wickedly into more familiar black territory. At over nine minutes in length, it should come as no surprise that there are many more grand twists and devious turns along the way.

Which also applies to Communion, even if that is a little bit shorter and more atmospheric overall. A welcome addition to the overall Oakenthrone sound that shows the band has layers. Black metal is still the seed this tree grows from, but it just so happens to come with many different branches.
