EP Review: Necronomicon Ex Mortis – The Mother Of Death (Self Released)
The Chicago-based death metal and horror-obsessed band, Necronomicon Ex Mortis, will release their brand-new EP, ‘The Mother of Death’, on November 29th, 2024.
Something wicked this way comes. It’s Necronomicon Ex Mortis and their five-track EP, The Mother of Death. A blood thirsty, horror-laden slice of manic heaviness, malevolent atmosphere, and wicked storytelling. Beginning in the most brutal way with Trick or Treat, a sure-fire Halloween anthem that delights in delivering a combination of razor-sharp riffing, chunky bone-grinding percussion, gurgling garish vocals, and a screaming guitar solo.
Its relentless speed is only matched by the following dark head banger that is Infestation. A track inspired by the video game Dishonored and one that showcases the more atmospheric side of the band. An aspect that makes their sound so much more impactful, especially when it comes with cinematic vibes, such as what can be found on the beastly title track. A song that tells an exciting story about a cult leader and is loosely based on The Conjuring 3. The highlight of this track, and the EP as a whole, is the extended guitar soloing that we get in this beast.
How about their tribute to Resident Evil, Itchy Tasty, though? A short and sinister, but lovable, take on the iconic video game’s ‘save room music’. Before Necronomicon Ex Mortis wrap up a head turning EP with a gargantuan tribute to Stephen King’s iconic novel, Salem’s Lot, and the 1979 TV movie adaptation.
What Necronomicon Ex Mortis are doing, combining melodic death metal with horror, may not be original, but there are few new bands doing it as well as them. This is a banging EP and while it doesn’t quite sate the bloodlust (we need an album), it does satisfy, none the less.
