EP Review: Necronomicon Ex Mortis – Silver Bullet (Self Released)

Blending death, melo-death, thrash, and prog; Chicago’s horror fiends Necronomicon Ex Mortis will release their sophomore EP ‘Silver Bullet’ on August 11th, 2023.

It’s fast, it’s heavy, it’s nasty, and it’s fun. Necronomicon Ex Mortis put the laughs back in horror, while being unhealthily intense with a diverse four-track EP. Is it death metal? Is that thrash metal we’re hearing though? Wait, why does it sound like a melodic death metal track now? When did it get so progressive? What the hell is going on?

Sit back and marvel at the eccentric sound of Necronomicon Ex Mortis as they take us on a wild, but brief journey of thrilling heaviness. Starting with a track about getting ripped apart by a giant undead ape called Crypt of the Gorilla God. It’s a thrashy and speedy opener that features some absolutely screaming guitar solos. An immediate example of the lovable nature of this EP and band.

Do you know Swedish death metal? That distinct sound is extremely prevalent in The Swamp as Necronomicon Ex Mortis pay tribute to it in some style. This is an absolute rager that feels delightfully old-school while having a freshness that comes from the impressive talents of this band.

Finally, it’s all about werewolves. First, with the ominous and spooky piece Cycle of the Werewolf, where the synth creates a ton of atmosphere. Perfect as an introduction to the title track, of course, named after the Stephen King story. Here Necronomicon Ex Mortis lean into blacker worlds of heaviness, but keep the energy high throughout. There’s no transformation here, this is a beast from the very start and its claws are extremely sharp.
