EP Review: Moni Jitchell – Clear (Gold Mold Records)
Moni Jitchell are a two-piece hardcore band from Glasgow. They have released their EP ‘Clear’ on limited edition cassette via Gold Mold Records. A follow-up LP will be released in early 2023, again on Gold Mold, further demonstrating how two people can make more noise than a band of ten.
A short slice of noise, Moni Jitchell do not hang about, dropping five tracks in about five minutes. Three of which come in at around a minute. Before those though, it’s Before, the opening track.
Don’t let the beat at the start fool you, Moni Jitchell are all about chaos and it doesn’t take long for this track to descend into that exact thing. The melee of instrumentation and vocals suggests there is an army of people bouncing off the walls here but in case it needs reminding, it’s only two.
Not A Chance, Split and Skelp, these are the three super-short slices of noise and feature some absolutely head-scratching sounds. Yet, there’s something so appealing about Moni Jitchell’s brand of bedlam.
Which leads to Tidy Rage, an apt title as it’s the most rhythmically pleasing track on the EP and is the most in line with what traditional hardcore sounds like. Moni Jitchell spitting up blood and bile on this one.
Every band wants to make an impression in the shortest amount of time. Few will achieve it in quite the way Moni Jitchell do here.
