EP Review: Modern Technology – Exploding Head Sessions (Self Released)
East London two-piece noise-rockers Modern Technology have released a brand new live album. Called ‘Exploding Head Sessions’, all proceeds from this release will go to Crisis at Christmas to help support the homeless during this critical time of year and to help fund and support Crisis’ vital year-round work with homelessness.
Exploding Head Sessions has Modern Technology taking the stage at The Shacklewell Arms in London. The session includes tracks from their self-titled debut EP plus two new tracks All is Forgiven and Bitter End.
We had a lot of good things to say about the bands debut EP a few months ago. The noise-makers bringing a hell of a unique favour to what is a notoriously messy style of music. You can read our review of the self-titled debut here.
Here we have 6 tracks, 4 from the EP and even more excitingly, 2 new tracks. All played in the live environment. If you’re a Modern Technology fan then this is a required purchase especially as all the proceeds are going to such a worthy cause. Hell, even if you don’t know of them it’s worth picking up. Not only do you give to a worthy cause but you’re also in for a treat once you hit play.
A very noisy, fuzzy and uncomfortable treat but a treat none the less. Don’t be ungrateful, Modern Technology sound amazing here. We’ve already shared our thoughts on the self-titled track, Queue Jumper, Project Fear and Modern Detritus in our EP review so we’re not going to repeat ourselves here. Suffice to say, the thrum and fuzziness of the guitars sound so much more intense live. I imagine the air in the room was as thick as soup, as warm and as sticky as a Bayou swamp.
Our attention is naturally drawn to the two new tracks, All is Forgiven and Bitter End. Two tracks that show what Modern Technology produced on the first EP wasn’t a fluke. Both are slow, drawn out pain-inducing listens but it’s the latter that stands out more. The morose intro where the vocals drawl and a guitar vibrates away behind it. Before the intensity is taken up a notch in incredibly heavy style. Switching tempos with ease, it’s a track that grips tighter and tighter until your left gasping for air.
A wickedly good release by a wickedly good band for a wickedly good cause. What are you waiting for?!
