EP Review: Mezmik – Unlikely Hero (Self Released)

Hailing from the vibrant music landscape of Brisbane, Australia, Mezmik is a dynamic five-piece band making waves with their unique blend of melodic metal infused with symphonic elements. Their debut EP, ‘Unlikely Hero’, will be released on July 15th, 2024.

The Aussie metal scene continues to impress as more and more new bands emerge offering up fresh sounds and exciting twists on well-worn formulas. Say hello to Mezmik, a melodic metal band that utilises big symphonic elements to make their heavy music even more grandiose.

Introducing their debut EP with the blood-pumping and heart-racing cinematic intro of New Dawn and seamlessly transitioning into the title track. This is where the power of Mezmik is fully unleashed and it’s a tornado of intensity and beauty. Lavish melodies, raging riffs, punchy drumbeats, and two styles of vocals; one that soars epically, and one that scowls and howls.

Having impressed with that start, Mezmik now start to build on an important aspect to their sound, the cinematic symphonic edge they have, and Flames and Fury proves to be an extravagant effort. Where no single part of the band overshadows the other, which in this style of metal, isn’t always the case. Something further showcased in the following Broken Love, even if the vocals are so enthusiastically delivered here.

Having flirted with melody so far, Mezmik make it the focal point of Hollow, which allows the vocals to really stand out. Which is nothing to complain about as they are immense, but it’s also fair to say that this isn’t the most compelling of tracks on the EP, at first. It vastly improves at the halfway point with a heavy turn and a banging guitar solo.

Then along comes Heart Once Torn to being the energy back up, get the body moving, and the head well and truly banging. Mezmik at their most instrumentally wild sounding, delivering something more progressively challenging. Before wrapping up their impressive debut with the aptly titled Killer, because it is *ahem* a killer track. One with massive cinematic value and punchy symphonic heaviness.
