EP Review: Matt Finucane – Bang Bang Exorcism (Eyeless Records)
Matt Finucane, the British musician known for his distinctive style that blends elements of post-punk, grunge, and art-rock, will release his latest EP, ‘Bang Bang Exorcism’ on September 27th, 2024.
A unique artist who really embodies the ‘do what you want’ mantra that most musicians wish they had. Matt Finucane offers up a really listenable rock experience across the six tracks of this EP. An eclectic mix of ideas, but filled with creative spirit and emphatic passion.
The innate ability of each track to ease you in, take hold, and grip tighter as things play out, is impressive. With opener Run with the Freaks showcasing this with aplomb. The slight ring of discordance to a rocking rhythm that has a punk twist, leading to a burst of manic chaos, is quite something.
With attentions now focused on him completely, Matt offers up something catchy in a fun post-punk way with Dear Darkness. Before shrouding things in sinister gloom with Witchcraft Mind and adding a touch more weirdness to things with Dark Hills. If you needed any more proof of the artist’s eccentric ways, then this latter track will provide.
The fascination with what he can produce continues into the latter part of the EP as Matt creates an electrifying sonic experience with another slice of punk-infused oddness called The Jazzmaster. Then following that up with the effortless rock dramatics of A Piece of Dad’s Old Hearth. At over six-minutes in length it is slightly drawn out, but that’s forgivable enough as it is the EP closer and it has been a fun listening experience.
