EP Review: Lone Cairn – Music Of The Spheres (Self Released)

Lone Cairn, a hard rock band from Grenoble, France, will release their new EP, ‘Music of the Spheres’ on August 23rd, 2024. The EP is an ambitious one-track progressive rock release designed to take the listeners on a musical journey inspired by Dan Simmons’ novels The Hyperion Cantos. This instrumental track illustrates Raul Endymion’s heroic journey through rich and evocative soundscapes.

A singular track that demands focus, while also offering an experience that holds the attention, there is a ‘give and take’ aspect to Music of the Spheres. Where the more the listener is willing to be immersed, the more reward they will find within the music. Likewise, the more Lone Cairn push and pull progressively, the more scrambled the mind becomes. The listener and the band becoming fully intertwined as the track develops.

Now, Lone Cairn might start this piece off in fairly simple fashion, but it doesn’t take long for the music to evolve. Ebbing and flowing impressively though touching melody-driven passages, lively rock infusions, groovy strength, and so much exciting experimentation that draws from a wide wealth of musical ideas (the synths are delightful). Lone Cairn really do show off some serious creativeness over the near 25-minute runtime of Music of the Spheres (Chap I-VI) and the end result is a desire to hear more and see what further ideas this band might have.

Does it capture the feel of Dan Simmons’ novels The Hyperion Cantos? I don’t know because I’ve never read them but I can say that it does encapsulate the feel of a journey. One that is vibrantly intense and vividly colourful. Which is a journey everyone should want to be on.
