EP Review: King Of The Dead – The Summoning (Self Released)
Alternative rock mob, King of the Dead are primed to unveil their colossal new EP, The Summoning, with an accompanying full comic book, on Friday 1st October 2021.
King of the Dead are revealing a story through a succession of songs, videos and updates from a mysterious masked individual, the Familiar. As described by the trio:
He is the public face of the band – an individual that sits between worlds – the earthly realisation of secretive ancient forces.
Peppy and energetic is the name of the game as Control gets going. The bouncy riffs and foot-tapping drum beat play off the sharper pop-punkier vocals quite nicely. It’s a track made up of individual parts coming together nicely, such as the amazing bass hums, the chorus and organ flourishes.
Destroy My Name and Running Out of Time have a more chilled out vibe but provide catchy tones and grand singalong moments. King of the Dead exude passion and it bleeds through every single second of both these tracks. The latter has a touch of flamboyant gothic-ness to it too!
Catchy is an overused word but it has to be stated again when it comes to the fun and danceable Damned. Before this EP comes to a close with a burst of foot-tapping and body-shaking energy in the form of With Love.
A fun listen from beginning to end. It’s not completely clear just how this kind of upbeat alternative rock fits with the story they’re trying to tell but that might be something that becomes clearer through multiple listens and the accompanying comic book.
