EP Review: Karg – Resilienz (AOP Records)

Karg was founded back in the summer of 2006 as a one-man project (which was later transformed into a live band as well) by Harakri for the Sky vocalist J.J. and offers a furious and original mixture of atmospheric black metal, post rock, grunge, shoegaze and post punk.

Almost a year to the day that they released their excellent full-length album ‘Traktat’, Krag return with a two-track EP, entitled Resilienz. It will be released on January 22nd 2021 via AOP Records.

With one track just short of 15 minutes and the other passing the 20-minute mark, there is no denying fans get plenty of bang for their buck here. Beginning in melancholic fashion, Abbitte has an eerie and uncomfortable melody that explodes with blackened instrumentation and shouted vocals. Delving into a dark style of atmosphere, Krag pull out all manner of horrors that swirl through the mind like nightmarish visions. The result is something that clings to the senses like glue and no amount of shaking, caused by an ever-increasing tempo, will remove it.

The second track is called Lorazepam and has a darker and sinister edge but is still littered and layered with the beautifully forlorn elements that make Karg such a joy to listen to. More frantic feeling, the vocals are even more desperately passionate and regardless of the tempo, you get the constant impression that this took a lot out of the band. Hell, as the listener it’s exhausting.
