EP Review: Jesus Wept – Apartheid Redux (Redefining Darkness Records)
Hailing from Detroit, Michigan, Jesus Wept self-released their (digital only) debut EP Crushing Apartheid in late-2017, unleashing their brand of sleaze-soaked Death Metal upon the industrial wasteland they call home.
While Apartheid Redux contains re-mixed/re-mastered tracks from the original EP (1-4), it also features brand new unreleased work (5-6) and a fun cover of W.A.S.P. classic ‘Animal (Fuck Like a Beast)’. It will be released on August 21st 2020 via Redefining Darkness Records.
A chance to hear a little-known EP, with the added bonus of a couple of new tracks and a cover for those who were unaware of it back when it first showed up.
There’s some groove to Buried Face Down even though it is heavily rooted in the harsher side of metal. The kind of shit that gets a grimace and some serious head-banging underway.
With a bit more of a lean towards deathcore, the 41 second blast of Drowning in Holy Water absolutely slays. Followed by the righteous fury of Hammering the Nails and the momentous thumping Jesus in Chains (Father in Hell).
That’s the 2017 EP done (utterly fantastic) and it’s now time for Jesus Wept to showcase where they are heading with a pair of newbies. Comfortably Dumb and Fucked on the Cross, the former a near 5-minute slab of guitar-driven, heated heaviness and the latter, a raging cesspool of meaty metal. Both stellar head-bangers which leads us to the finale and a pretty awesome cover of W.A.S.P.’s legendary Animal (Fuck Like A Beast).
