EP Review: Insomnium – Argent Moon (Century Media Records)
Following up 2019’s acclaimed album ‘Heart Like A Grave’, Insomnium return with a brand new 4-track EP called ‘Argent Moon’. It will be released on September 17th via Century Media Records.
Misery loves company and what great company have Insomnium proven to be over the years. The groups heartfelt, melancholic and heavy sound has wowed fans around the world and once again; despair, anguish and cold beauty oozes from their new music.
Four despondent tracks of Insomnium controlled gorgeous harmonious heaviness, The Conjurer emerging from the gloom for an opening that can best be described as poignant. It has got genuine emotion throughout but with deep and dark heaviness. The latter guitar solo is one of the best you’ll hear all year.
Cleaner melodies, vocals and warmer synth throughout The Reticent enhance the short and dark expulsions of heaviness. An epic effort from a band capable of delivering tracks like this with ease. Although the following grandiosity of The Antagonist isn’t far off that. Here we get a more desperate style of dirty vocals against the comforting clean singing and ringing melodies. Again, it’s undeniably touching while being extensively dark and heavy.
With one last offering of gloominess, Argent Moon comes to a close. The Wanderer, the most melancholic track but one that transitions step by step into deeper and murkier territories. The emotional weight lifted slightly for a flurry of powerful metal energy and ending in an abrupt but impactful way.
Best of EP of 2021? It’s in with a shout – provided you can enjoy beautiful misery.
