EP Review: Hubert Selby Junior Infants – Good Evening, Pricks! It’s the Hubert Selby Jr. Infants (SuperFi Records)
Hubert Selby Junior Infants (what a name) are a Dublin, Ireland indie-grunge throwback band who will release their new EP ‘Good Evening, Pricks! It’s the Hubert Selby Jr. Infants’ on May 5th, 2023, via SuperFi Records.
An attention-grabbing name for sure, but how’s the music?
Pretty damn good as it goes. Featuring six tracks of moody moments, indie-infused rock energy, and traces of punk thinking here and there. All of which comes through on the opener, How to Steal A Car. Hubert Selby Junior Infants going from morose sounding melodies to high-powered rockiness with veritable ease.
Delving deeper into their imagination with Fangs and a Cape, Hubert Selby Junior Infants test the patience with the blend of temperaments that come forth here. Before throwing a nod towards the direction of garage rock and punk with Miracle Whip and Hucklebucker, albeit a begrudging one.
Finally, it’s Build Me a Monster and How to Crash a Car. The former being a softer and melodic listen that is surprisingly sweet even if the melody is just a little off-kilter and does rock up a bit as it goes on. Whereas the latter is a short outro that has a lot of atmosphere to it.
