EP Review: Hidden Mothers – Hidden Mothers (Surviving Sounds)
Few newcomers to the UK’s vastly talented heavy underground have managed to deliver so much from so little, but Sheffield, UK based blackgaze quintet Hidden Mothers have whet our appetites, pathing a mountain of hype and great potential based on one sole single, The Longest Journey Yet, and a handful of spectacular live shows supporting the likes of Blanket, Inter Arma, Wren, Coilguns and Planes Mistaken For Stars. Now following that initial fireworks display, Hidden Mothers have finally found their moment to unleash their highly anticipated self-titled debut EP, which will be released as a limited one-sided galaxy swirl vinyl and digital offering through emerging UK label Surviving Sounds on September 18th 2020.
Already being considered the new shining star of the blackgaze scene, Hidden Mothers come with a hefty amount of expectation. Something that could sink many a band before they even begin but not a band like Hidden Mothers who meet that expectation with veritable ease.
The biggest disappointment of this debut is that it’s just three tracks long. Yet, what a trio of tracks they are. Savage at times, mournful at others, dripping in melancholic melodies and crushing blackened metal tones, this is a game-changer of a release.
