EP Review: Heretical Sect – Rapturous Flesh Consumed (Redefining Darkness Records/Gilead Media)

Southwest American death cult, Heretical Sect reach a new depth of darkness with their debut full length album, Rapturous Flesh Consumed. The follow-up to 2019’s EP, Rotting Cosmic Grief, it will be released via Redefining Darkness Records (CD) and Gilead Media (Digital / Vinyl) on the 11th December 2020.

After attempting to rip our face off with what we described at the time as “a crude style of blackened doom and death” with their 2019 EP, Heretical Sect are back to finish the job.

However, with a much more refined and better produced release. That’s clear from the moment the familiar blackened blend of doom and death comes crashing down hard with Rising Light of Lunacy. Incredibly heavy, the droning tempo kicks some serious ass, but it is the rapid and manic burst of aggression that really gains the attention. The bar has been set.

Only for The Depths of Weeping Infinity to reach up, grab the bar and drag it all the way into the hellish landscapes of black metal. A mind-melting level of ferocity.

Then its time for something truly special as the band pull everyone out of their comfort zone with a 10+ minute discharge of blasphemous doom and death. However you thought the remainder of this album would pan out after the first two tracks, nothing could have prepared you for this. The horror swarms like flies over a bloated corpse, the doom drags the soul to dark depths from where there is no escape…it’s a grandiose thriller.

Another pair of immense offerings with Pit Abominations and Degradation, along with the short atmospheric Resurrection Sky sandwiched in between, make up the latter part of the album. Where, once again, the sweltering doom and death combo creates turbulence like no other. Both the longer tracks are as unfiltered as everything heard so far. Building on the growing grandeur that has slowly becoming embedded within the album as a whole.

Heretical Sect have come along in leaps and bounds – this debut full length, the proof.
