EP Review: Grimgotts – Ignite the Flame (Self Released)

The UK symphonic power metal band, Grimgotts are back with a brand-new EP titled ‘Ignite the Flame’. It will be released on the 6th of May 2022.

I hope it’s no secret that I love this band. Grimgotts brand of power metal just speaks to me and I find their music both adventurous, uplifting, exciting and intrinsically catchy. I spent a lot of time with them a few years ago. Reviewing the Tales EP, the Sagas EP, the Legends EP and eventually the full album, Tales, Sagas and Legends. The latter coming out almost a year to the day that this new EP arrives.

Can you tell I’m excited to talk about this?

Kicking off with the lead single and title track, Ignite the Flame. Grimgotts go grand immediately, making you feel ten feet tall with a rousing, fist-pumping amount of energy in their undeniably power metal way. It delivers everything you want from this band but, and this is crucial, it sounds like an advancement. The components that make the band’s sound so opulent are clearer, and the focus on a thumping rhythm keeps it placed firmly in the ‘metal’ camp. Then you have the fact that it is stupidly catchy as so much of Grimgotts’ music is.

The best song the band have ever put out? The argument is there and it’s bloody strong.

Though, what’s there to complain about when it comes to Away We Sail? A bit more tongue in cheek, a lot bouncier and a drinking song if ever there was one. The guest vocals of Alex Watson really make this a different but familiar beast. Again, undeniably catchy and smile inducing.

Finally, to wrap up the EP we have a remake of Calm Before the Storm, taken from Grimgotts’ album, Lions of the Sea.

If the idea behind doing this was to show just how far the band has come, it really works. A track that is dripping in emotional worth, has the rocking power that we all know and love, has a ton of reason to head-bang and, unsurprisingly, is stupendously catchy.

Now, the focus on this EP is Ignite the Flame but don’t let that give you the impression that the overall product isn’t simply brilliant from beginning to end. More people need to know about Grimgotts, more people need to be talking about them and more people need to find themselves lifted up by listening to releases like this.
