EP Review: Gloam – Well Dwelling (Self Released)
Forming in early 2022, Perth’s post-shoegaze four-piece Gloam have already carved a name for themselves in their corner of the world and now look to build on that with their new EP, ‘Well Dwelling’. Released on October 4th, the EP acts as an inward reflection, covering various themes such as moving on, grief, anxiety, personal insecurities, growth, moments of hindsight and self-fulfillment.
There’s a dreaminess to Gloam’s sound that encapsulates their shoegaze makeup perfectly, yet, it is just one aspect and a thick vein of post-hardcore influence runs through this record. Alongside twists to well-worn alternative rock formulas, all of this results in a mighty memorable release. One that features five unique listens and manages to envelop the listener warmly. Even if the dreamy style does have a dark edge.
Gloomy or not, an opener like Hinder has the ability to captivate thanks to a robust rhythm section and vocals that are lightly layered over. This enjoyable opener then leads nicely into the thick ambience of Wilt, before Residue brings back a more ‘traditional’ sound of post-rock twisted by shoegaze atmosphere. On the latter Gloam begin to really expand, showcasing more depth to their melody, but also that they can be heavier and not lose the sense of gloom that saturates the entire record.
The penultimate track is Che Rose, and here, Gloam offer up the most likable of melody and ambience combos. Sticking to an enchanting instrumental sound for nearly five minutes. Which does mean the instant hit of guitars and drums that welcomes the finale of Diving Heavy feels weightier. Gloam bringing forth their noisier side, but keeping dreamy melody at the forefront of their sound.
