EP Review: Gingerbass – More Or Less (Self Released)

Released on December 13th, 2024, ‘More or Less’ is the new EP from Irish instrumental prog rock band, Gingerbass aka Ralf W. Garcia.

The bass is front and centre here, and the intricate detail that Ralf W. Garcia teases out of the instrument is very impressive. While Gingerbass might be his baby, he’s joined by an array of musicians who bring their own unique styles to a progressive set of songs. It’s not just guitars and drums, but a saxophone, keys, synth, and even a Bodhrán (a traditional Irish drum) that makes this release unique sounding.

Not only that, but there’s an intriguing contrast in place throughout the EP, one that ties into the title and looks to balance simplicity and complexity. Two sides of the same coin, and both an important component of not just Gingerbass’ sound but progressive rock in general. While we do often think of progressive rock as being complex to the point it can be off-putting to casual listeners, well-done progressive rock can draw them in. Which is what Gingerbass tries to do, with much success thanks to enjoyable efforts like Double Voltage, Much More, and Timeless.

There’s a lot of creativity here and the reward for all listeners is to hear how Gingerbass makes it all notable, especially on a first listen. The layers are there to be unpacked, but on first listen, the EP’s extensive detail is exposed in a very edifying way. Thanks to an approach that has simplicity in mind as much as complexity, a powerful impression is left.
