EP Review: Garden of Eyes – Boomhammer (Ancient Entity Records)
Following the 4 demo tapes, split CD and compilation CD (featuring all material), Garden of Eyes return with a debut on vinyl. This 7″ features a brand-new song entitled “Boomhammer” on the A-side with the B-side holding a remixed and remastered version of “Saw Cleaver” which was previously exclusive to the compilation CD.
The sound once more blends Swedish chainsaw guitars with that dripping atmosphere that Finnish bands perfected. This rotten combination of sounds and Bloodborne / Lovecraftian lore can only be described as Eldritch Death Metal. It will be released on May 7th 2021 via Ancient Entity Records.
Garden of Eyes is a grubby and guttural band, that much has been proven in the past and this two-track release doesn’t change that. Albeit, the production is vastly improved so you can really soak up the twisted evil and filth of the sound. You’ll want to as well. The two tracks on offer are the top end of the scale in regards to Garden of Eyes’ quality.
The new track, Boomhammer with its hysterical bursts of instruments and echoing, rasping vocals leaves an indent. Deep and dark, a mid-point guitar solo is so unexpected but very welcome. Hell, there’s almost a foot-tapping quality to this track which is a strange thing to think about music so weighted towards the evil extreme.
Saw Cleaver is the other offering and is a much more horrific and atmospheric listen. A much rawer and much less refined listen, there is a notable difference between this and the new track. Still, there’s something so appealing about the level of abject disgust that exists here.
It’s not for everyone – that’s the summation of Garden of Eyes overall – but if you like metal that makes you feel dirty all over, this is the stuff.
