EP Review: From Ruins – Poison for Your Soul (Earache Digital Distribution)
Released on September 6th, 2024, via Earache Digital Distribution, ‘Poison for Your Soul’ is the sophomore EP from modern metallers From Ruins.
Injecting freshness into the modern metal scene with their debut EP, ‘Inner Demons’, From Ruins left an impression and now look to build and enhance that with a new hefty four-track release. One that showcases imagination with its opener, the title track. From Ruins adding a cinematic edge to a more sinister melodic sound, but pivoting in a much heavier direction to hit an anthemic high with the following track, The Cure.
It’s here that From Ruins unleash a torrent of heaviness that has plenty of familiar metalcore tropes (such as the clean vocals that come along in the chorus) but isn’t defined by one genre over another. Its aggression is what stands out, and on that front, From Ruins get quite intense here.
Intensity that also rises up notably in Until We’re Gone. Although here, the structure is different. Going from more melody laced aspects to furiously fast moments and flowing nicely into an infectiously harmonised chorus. It, like everything heard so far, is a certified banger.
As for the finale Backseat… From Ruins close things out in style. Delivering a dazzling display of furious instrumentals and brilliantly balanced vocals. The way the clean and heavy side of the vocals play off each other, backed up by roaring riffs and pounding drum beats, is exceptionally enjoyable. This is the EP’s beast and likely to be one that turns more heads than any other.
That being said, it’s a class release overall that satisfies fully. That’s two for two.
