EP Review: From Ruins – Inner Demons (Self Released)

From Ruins, the Northern Irish metal band, will release their debut EP ‘Inner Demons’ on October 13th, 2023. The new EP showcases From Ruins’ ability to bring together the best parts of noughties metalcore and fuse it with the more experimental and progressive elements heard within the genre today.

Injecting some freshness into the UK scene with their modernised metalcore groove, From Ruins have one simple goal here, and it’s to leave an impression. Which, if a listener has some sense, will happen with just one song. The inimitable and punchy head-banger that is Hate Me. A track that showcases the varying elements of the band’s sound. Complex and commanding, energetic and erratic, infectious and intense, it’s a wicked opening anthem that can elect both a singalong and a circle pit in equally concentrated ways.

How’s about some of Damnation though? From Ruins are in a particularly scathing mood here and deliver some scowling heaviness and speed. Alongside a big chorus that utilises clean vocals nicely.

Finally, and disappointingly because it’s such a short release, it’s Running Away and it’s another banger. Arguably the EP’s grooviest sounding track, the riffs are so bloody infectious, and the vocal styles mesh brilliantly together here. As good as Hate Me is, this might be everyone’s favourite track. The tempo is such an injection of adrenaline.
