EP Review: Friends from Moon – The End (Self Released)

Friends from Moon is a one-man band helmed by Indian musician, Ritwik Shivam. It acts as an outlet for blatant expression of every human emotion and the intention with this is to share his best musical experiences which have been inspired from the world of music, art and literature. A few prominent styles that can be heard in his music are progressive & alternative metal, hard & alternative rock, electronica, industrial and orchestral music.

The new EP, ‘The End’, is based in a futuristic world with a combination of low life-high tech which is merged with dystopian and cyberpunk aesthetics to define the soundscape. It will be released on October 25th, 2024.

Ritwik Shivam and his Friends from Moon project has delivered a highly enjoyable experience before, so there’s a confidence coming into this new EP. Something that proves to be well founded as the first of the three tracks, ‘The Circle Completes’ showcases an array of musical ideas and identities, albeit in shaky fashion.. Heavy on the electronica, but synth focused and with industrial energy, it develops in an interesting way.

Leading to Castaway, a more vibrant example of the eccentric side of Friends from Moon as heavier and darker sounds smash into the techno style beats and groovy synth-based rhythms. The cherry on top coming from some great vocals. Easily the best track of the bunch.

Although there’s certainly nothing to complain about with The Waiting Time as it’s easily recognisable as the heaviest track of the EP and regular contributor, Pritam Adhikary of Aarlon is an immense vocalist.

The shaky start is well and truly corrected with two exceptional examples of creativity. The End is highly enjoyable and it would be nice to see if Ritwik continues to develop this specific style and story going forward.
