EP Review: Fangclub – All Good (Self Released)

Irish alt rockers, Fangclub, will release their comeback EP, ‘All Good’, on the 14th of June 2024. It marks the band’s first collection of new music in half a decade following their critically acclaimed album ‘Vulture Culture’ in 2019.

It may not be ‘all good’ in the world right now, but things seem a little bit brighter when Fangclub are releasing music. While plenty of tracks have been out and about in the world, their impact isn’t diminished and this EP serves as a lovely collection of Fangclub’s emphatic return.

Attention is the opening track, and it finds Fangclub combining the infectious accessibility of alternative rock with a rawer vibe. It’s got an understated ‘loudness’ that is kept at bay by swooning melody, the cherry on top being a chorus that digs into the brain matter deeply.

Early on, the creativity that Fangclub are showing is extremely heartening, and that warm feeling continues with Out My Head and Natural. The former is an alternative anthem, a riff-focused head-banger that is super-digestible. Whereas the latter is a little weirder, a little more experimental, but with a whole lot of infectious fun. The chorus is class, but it’s the trippy touches around it that really stand out.

You had Me at Hello then finds Fangclub creating body-spasming rock catchiness, the bass thick throughout. Before Exit Oblivion wraps things up in a style. A finale that has strong melodies, big bursts of alternative heaviness, and no small amount of weirdness. It’s a satisfying closer, but that’s no surprise as this is an EP that satisfies from beginning to end.
