EP Review: Extort – Reset (Self Released)

Scotland, Edinburgh-based extreme metal band Extort will self-release their debut EP ‘Reset’ on April 19th, 2023.

Scotland sure does produce some quality metal and Extort proudly join the list of up-and-coming raging heavyweights to check out. Delivering a pounding, frantic, and guttural groove-infused blast of extreme heaviness with their debut EP, Reset.

Coming out of the blocks with the meaty Skyscrapers, the intensity is at a high level and the excitement for what this band has to offer is palatable. Yet, they’ve also got some tricks up their sleeves and a tone shift, screaming guitar solo, and technical showcase at the end prove that.

With the bar well and truly set, Omen has a tough task following that but Extort combine moments of chaotic instrumentation, measured melody, and an overall animated approach to keep things super-hot. The clean vocals soar here, and the chorus is a bit of a banger.

Following those highlights, Lunacy and Variant offer some variety. The former’s fast-pace and epic guitar melodies deliver more ear-pleasing music. While the latter sees Extort continue to expand their musical output with filthy sounding groove and moodier heaviness to get many circle pits going.

Before this impressive debut EP wraps up with the crunchy instrumental and gurning head-banger that is Conjurer. A very satisfying closer that continues the EP trend of quality track after quality track. Extort making an impression and leaving you wanting more.
